How many days until New Year?

The countdown runs automatically to the next 1 January and shows the days remaining, the weeks and days, and the weekday New Year's Day falls on.

It's the number of days from today until the next 1 January — no input needed.

Calculating the countdown…

The countdown is measured from your device's local date today to the next occurrence, in whole days, and rolls over to next year once the day passes.

How does it work?

Days are counted in whole calendar days using UTC, so the result is unaffected by time zones or daylight saving. A negative count means the date has already passed.

Days-until formula

d=targettodayd = \text{target} - \text{today}
d
Whole days between today and the target date.
target
The date you are counting down to.
today
The current date (your local today).

From 1 June to 1 July is 30 days.

Method & sources

We count whole calendar days from today to the next occurrence of a fixed annual date. The target rolls forward to the following year once the day has passed. Dates are handled in UTC so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

How we calculate

  • The count is whole days from today to the date you choose.
  • Today is your device's local date; the target date is the one you pick.
  • A negative count means the date has already passed.
  • The day of the week shown is the weekday the target date falls on.

Rounding

The countdown is in whole calendar days. Today and the target date are counted in UTC, so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

What this countdown does

The countdown targets 1 January, which in practice is the same thing as counting to midnight on New Year's Eve — the last day you see on the counter is 31 December. It finds the next 1 January, shows the days left, and rolls over the moment the year turns, so from 1 January onwards it is already counting to the year after. This is the one countdown where the number itself carries some weight, since it is also the number of days left to finish anything you meant to do this year.

How to use it

  1. Open the page — the countdown is already running from today.
  2. Read the days remaining and the exact date.
  3. Check the weeks-and-days breakdown and the weekday it falls on.
  4. Use Share to send the live countdown to anyone.

When it's useful

Use it to book a table or a trip while there is still availability — New Year's Eve is the hardest night of the year to arrange late. It is also useful for the practical end-of-year deadlines that quietly share the date: allowances that do not carry over, subscriptions that renew on 1 January, and anything with a 31 December cut-off.

Which weekday New Year's Day falls on

The weekday decides how much of a break the turn of the year actually gives you, and whether New Year's Eve lands conveniently:

  • 1 January 2027 — Friday
  • 1 January 2028 — Saturday
  • 1 January 2029 — Monday
  • 1 January 2030 — Tuesday
  • 1 January 2031 — Wednesday

New Year's Eve or New Year's Day?

Worth being precise about, because the two are counted differently. This page counts whole days to 1 January. The celebration itself is the evening before, on 31 December, ending at midnight — which is the same instant the counter reaches zero. So if you are counting to the party rather than to the day after it, the number above is what you want; you simply spend the last of those days at the party.

Using the run-up

The last stretch of December fills up faster than people expect:

  • About 8 weeks out: book restaurants, venues, and travel for the 31st. This is the night that sells out first.
  • About 4 weeks out: check what expires on 31 December — holiday allowance, flexible spending, loyalty points, insurance terms.
  • About 2 weeks out: confirm transport home from wherever you are celebrating. Late-night public transport runs to special timetables and taxis are scarce.
  • The final week: buy anything for the evening itself, and note that shops close early on the 31st in most countries.

How the days are counted

The count is in whole calendar days from today to the date you pick, calculated in UTC so it never drifts with time zones or daylight saving. If the date has already passed, the count shows how many days ago it was.

FAQ

How many days until New Year?
The countdown above shows the exact number of days from today until the next 1 January.
Does it count to New Year's Eve or New Year's Day?
To 1 January. Since New Year's Eve ends at midnight on 31 December, that is the same moment — the counter reaching zero and the year turning are the same instant.
What weekday is New Year's Day next year?
The countdown shows it directly. For the coming years: 2027 is a Friday, 2028 a Saturday, 2029 a Monday, 2030 a Tuesday, and 2031 a Wednesday.
How many days are left in this year?
The same figure, near enough — the days remaining until 1 January are the days left of the current year, which is why this countdown doubles as a deadline for anything that has to be finished before the year ends.
Does the countdown reset after midnight?
Yes. Once 1 January has passed it starts counting towards the following 1 January, so the page is never out of date.
Can I share the countdown?
Yes. Share copies a link that reopens the countdown to the same date, always counting from the viewer's today.
