What this countdown does

Valentine's Day is always 14 February, so the date is fixed and only the weekday moves. The countdown finds the next one, shows the days left, and rolls over to the following year once it passes. The weekday is the detail worth checking early: a Valentine's Day on a Saturday changes what is realistic — dinner out, a night away — while one that lands on a Tuesday usually means something shorter on the evening itself, or moving the celebration to the nearest weekend.

When it's useful

Use it to book a restaurant while there are still tables, which in practice means weeks rather than days ahead — 14 February is one of the few nights of the year when ordinary restaurants sell out. It is also the lead time that decides whether flowers, a gift, or anything engraved or personalised can actually arrive on time.

Planning backwards from 14 February

The date is predictable, which makes the common mistakes avoidable:

• About 6 weeks out: book the restaurant if you want a specific one. The popular places take Valentine's bookings well before the month starts.
• About 3 weeks out: order anything personalised, engraved, or made to order — this is the last comfortable point for it to arrive.
• About 1 week out: order flowers for delivery. Prices rise into the date and the good delivery slots go first.
• The day itself: if you are cooking rather than going out, buy fresh ingredients the day before — 14 February is a bad day to improvise in a supermarket.

The same idea on other dates

Valentine's Day is the most widespread version of the idea but not the only one. Parts of Spain mark Sant Jordi on 23 April with books and roses instead, and several Latin American countries hold their own día del amor y la amistad on quite different dates — Colombia's falls in September.
