How many days until Christmas?

The countdown runs automatically to the next 25 December and shows the days remaining, the weeks and days, and the weekday Christmas falls on.

It's the number of days from today until the next 25 December — no input needed.

Calculating the countdown…

The countdown is measured from your device's local date today to the next occurrence, in whole days, and rolls over to next year once the day passes.

How does it work?

Days are counted in whole calendar days using UTC, so the result is unaffected by time zones or daylight saving. A negative count means the date has already passed.

Days-until formula

d=targettodayd = \text{target} - \text{today}
d
Whole days between today and the target date.
target
The date you are counting down to.
today
The current date (your local today).

From 1 June to 1 July is 30 days.

Method & sources

We count whole calendar days from today to the next occurrence of a fixed annual date. The target rolls forward to the following year once the day has passed. Dates are handled in UTC so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

How we calculate

  • The count is whole days from today to the date you choose.
  • Today is your device's local date; the target date is the one you pick.
  • A negative count means the date has already passed.
  • The day of the week shown is the weekday the target date falls on.

Rounding

The countdown is in whole calendar days. Today and the target date are counted in UTC, so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

What this countdown does

Christmas Day itself never moves — it is 25 December every year — but everything you have to organise around it does. The countdown finds the next 25 December, shows the days left, and rolls over to the following year the moment the day passes, so the page is never out of date. The weeks-and-days breakdown is usually the more useful number of the two: shopping, posting parcels, and booking travel all get planned in weeks, not in a single large day count. Seeing "nine weeks and four days" tells you where you stand in a way that "67 days" does not.

How to use it

  1. Open the page — the countdown is already running from today.
  2. Read the days remaining and the exact date.
  3. Check the weeks-and-days breakdown and the weekday it falls on.
  4. Use Share to send the live countdown to anyone.

When it's useful

Use it to pace gift shopping before the good stock disappears, to work out whether a parcel still has time to arrive, and to see which weekday Christmas lands on — that one detail decides how long the surrounding break actually is, and whether you need to get to a bank, a post office, or a shop before everything shuts.

Which weekday Christmas falls on

The weekday matters more than people expect, because it sets the shape of the whole holiday. A Christmas that lands mid-week splits the working days awkwardly; one that lands next to a weekend tends to produce a longer continuous break. These are the next few years:

  • 25 December 2026 — Friday
  • 25 December 2027 — Saturday
  • 25 December 2028 — Monday
  • 25 December 2029 — Tuesday
  • 25 December 2030 — Wednesday

Planning backwards from 25 December

Most Christmas stress comes from tasks that have a deadline earlier than the day itself. Rough milestones, counted back from 25 December:

  • About 8 weeks out: book travel and any accommodation, while there is still choice.
  • About 6 weeks out: order anything personalised, made to order, or shipped from abroad.
  • About 4 weeks out: Black Friday and Cyber Monday fall here — the natural point to buy the bigger gifts.
  • About 2–3 weeks out: national postal cut-offs for guaranteed delivery. Carriers publish the exact dates in November; check them rather than guessing.
  • The final week: fresh food orders, and anything that needs a bank, an office, or a shop to be open.

24, 25, or 26 December?

"Christmas" means a slightly different date depending on where you are. This countdown targets 25 December, the internationally recognised Christmas Day. In much of northern and central Europe the main family celebration is actually the evening of the 24th, so if you are counting to the meal rather than to the morning, subtract one day from the figure above. The 26th is a public holiday in a number of countries, known variously as Boxing Day or St Stephen's Day.

How the days are counted

The count is in whole calendar days from today to the date you pick, calculated in UTC so it never drifts with time zones or daylight saving. If the date has already passed, the count shows how many days ago it was.

FAQ

How many days until Christmas?
The countdown above shows the exact number of days from today until the next 25 December.
Does it count to this year or next?
To whichever 25 December comes next. Once Christmas passes, it automatically counts to next year.
What weekday does Christmas fall on this year?
The countdown shows it directly. For the next few years: 2026 is a Friday, 2027 a Saturday, 2028 a Monday, 2029 a Tuesday, and 2030 a Wednesday.
How many weeks until Christmas?
The weeks-and-days panel converts the day count for you, so you can see it as whole weeks plus the remainder rather than one long number.
When is the last day to post Christmas parcels?
It depends on the country and the service, and it changes every year. Postal operators publish their cut-off dates during November — as a rough guide, plan for somewhere around two to three weeks before the 25th for standard domestic post, and earlier for international.
Why does the countdown say a different number than another site?
Usually because of the target date or the time zone. This page counts whole calendar days to 25 December in UTC. A site counting to the evening of the 24th, or counting in a different zone, can be a day out.
Can I share the countdown?
Yes. Share copies a link that reopens the countdown to the same date, always counting from the viewer's today.
