How many days until Halloween?

The countdown runs automatically to the next 31 October and shows the days remaining, the weeks and days, and the weekday Halloween falls on.

It's the number of days from today until the next 31 October — no input needed.

Calculating the countdown…

The countdown is measured from your device's local date today to the next occurrence, in whole days, and rolls over to next year once the day passes.

How does it work?

Days are counted in whole calendar days using UTC, so the result is unaffected by time zones or daylight saving. A negative count means the date has already passed.

Days-until formula

d=targettodayd = \text{target} - \text{today}
d
Whole days between today and the target date.
target
The date you are counting down to.
today
The current date (your local today).

From 1 June to 1 July is 30 days.

Method & sources

We count whole calendar days from today to the next occurrence of a fixed annual date. The target rolls forward to the following year once the day has passed. Dates are handled in UTC so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

How we calculate

  • The count is whole days from today to the date you choose.
  • Today is your device's local date; the target date is the one you pick.
  • A negative count means the date has already passed.
  • The day of the week shown is the weekday the target date falls on.

Rounding

The countdown is in whole calendar days. Today and the target date are counted in UTC, so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

What this countdown does

Halloween is always 31 October, so the date never moves — but the weekday does, and that is what actually shapes the evening. This countdown finds the next 31 October, shows the days left, and rolls over to the following year once it passes. The weeks-and-days breakdown is the useful one if you are making a costume rather than buying one, since sewing, ordering parts, and drying paint all happen on a weekly rhythm rather than a daily one.

How to use it

  1. Open the page — the countdown is already running from today.
  2. Read the days remaining and the exact date.
  3. Check the weeks-and-days breakdown and the weekday it falls on.
  4. Use Share to send the live countdown to anyone.

When it's useful

Use it to leave enough time for a costume that needs making, to order decorations before the good ones sell out, and to see which weekday the 31st falls on — a Halloween on a Friday or Saturday means parties and later trick-or-treating, while a mid-week one usually means an earlier, shorter evening because of school and work the next morning.

Which weekday Halloween falls on

The date is fixed but the day of the week is not, and it changes the evening more than anything else does:

  • 31 October 2026 — Saturday
  • 31 October 2027 — Sunday
  • 31 October 2028 — Tuesday
  • 31 October 2029 — Wednesday
  • 31 October 2030 — Thursday

Planning backwards from 31 October

Almost everything that goes wrong with Halloween is a timing problem rather than a money problem:

  • About 4 weeks out: decide the costume. This is the point where a handmade one is still realistic and an ordered one still arrives.
  • About 2 weeks out: buy anything that sells out — specific costume sizes, face paint, and the better decorations.
  • About 1 week out: buy sweets, unless you plan to eat them before the night.
  • 1 to 2 days out: carve the pumpkin. Any earlier and it collapses in on itself, especially somewhere mild and damp.

The days around it

Halloween sits at the front of a small cluster of dates. The name is a contraction of All Hallows' Eve — the evening before All Hallows' Day, or All Saints' Day, on 1 November, which is a public holiday in a number of European countries. All Souls' Day follows on 2 November. In much of Europe those two days are the older and quieter tradition, focused on visiting graves and remembering the dead, and Halloween as a costume-and-sweets evening arrived on top of them relatively recently.

How the days are counted

The count is in whole calendar days from today to the date you pick, calculated in UTC so it never drifts with time zones or daylight saving. If the date has already passed, the count shows how many days ago it was.

FAQ

How many days until Halloween?
The countdown above shows the exact number of days from today until the next 31 October.
Is Halloween always on 31 October?
Yes. The date is fixed, so only the weekday changes from year to year.
What weekday is Halloween this year?
The countdown shows it directly. For the next few years: 2026 is a Saturday, 2027 a Sunday, 2028 a Tuesday, 2029 a Wednesday, and 2030 a Thursday.
When should I carve the pumpkin?
One or two days before, not earlier. A carved pumpkin starts to soften and collapse within a few days, and faster in mild, damp weather. Keeping it somewhere cool buys a little extra time.
Why is it called Halloween?
It is a contraction of All Hallows' Eve — the evening before All Saints' Day on 1 November.
Can I share the countdown?
Yes. Share copies a link that reopens the countdown to the same date, always counting from the viewer's today.
