What this countdown does

Thanksgiving is not a fixed date. It is the fourth Thursday of November, so it shifts each year and lands somewhere between 22 and 28 November. The weekend it sets up

Thanksgiving anchors a four-day stretch that matters well beyond the US. Black Friday is the day immediately after; Cyber Monday is the Monday that closes the weekend, four days after Thanksgiving itself. That is why European shops advertise a date rule they otherwise have nothing to do with — the sales calendar was imported wholesale along with the name. If you are shopping rather than cooking, the Thanksgiving date is what tells you when the discounts start.

US or Canadian Thanksgiving?

This countdown targets the American date. Canada holds its own Thanksgiving considerably earlier — the second Monday of October — so if that is the one you are counting to, this is not the right page. The two share a name and a harvest origin but not a date, and Canadian Thanksgiving has no connection to the Black Friday weekend.
