We count whole calendar days from today to the next occurrence of a fixed annual date. The target rolls forward to the following year once the day has passed. Dates are handled in UTC so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

What this countdown does

The Super Bowl is the NFL's championship game, and unlike a fixed holiday it moves with the league calendar. In recent seasons it has landed on the second Sunday of February, but the exact date comes from the NFL's own schedule rather than from a rule you can work out yourself. This page holds the announced dates and always counts to whichever one comes next, so the number is right whether you check in September or the week of the game.

The NFL sets these years in advance, but a date this far out is a plan, not a promise — the league has moved the game before when the season structure changed. Treat the nearer dates as firm and the later ones as the current schedule.

What happens in the weeks before

If you are counting down, these are the markers that actually matter on the way there:

  • About four weeks out: the playoffs begin, and the field narrows every weekend.
  • Two weeks out: the conference championships decide the two teams. Until this Sunday, nobody knows who is playing.
  • The week of the game: the halftime performer and the ad line-up are already public; this is when most people commit to a plan.
  • The day itself: kickoff is normally in the evening US Eastern time, so the game runs into the night.

Why the date moves at all

The Super Bowl is not pinned to a calendar date the way Christmas is. It sits a fixed number of weeks after the end of the regular season, so when the league changed the season length the game shifted with it. That is why a countdown that just adds a year to the last date will drift, and why this page uses the published schedule instead.
