What this countdown does

A festival is bought early and lived through slowly. You often have the ticket six or seven months before the line-up is even announced, which is a strange amount of time to hold on to something. This countdown turns that date into days remaining, weeks and days, and the weekday it starts on — and because it recalculates from today every time the page loads, a shared link keeps working for everyone you send it to.

How to use it

1. Pick the date you're counting down to.
2. Read the days remaining at the top.
3. Check the weeks-and-days breakdown and the weekday it falls on.
4. Use Share to send the live countdown to anyone.

When it's useful

It earns its keep in the middle stretch: after the ticket, before the packing. That is when travel gets booked, when time off has to be requested, and when the group has to agree on who is driving and who is bringing the tent. A number in weeks makes those conversations concrete in a way that "this summer" never does.

Which date should you enter?

Bigger festivals do not start on one day, they start in stages, and picking the wrong one can put you out by three or four days:

• The day the campsite opens — usually the earliest date on the ticket, and the one people actually travel on.
• The first day of music on the main stages — often several days later at festivals with warm-up days.
• Your own arrival day — the right choice if you are going later than the rest of the group, or only for a day ticket.

The weekday shown alongside the count is the quick sanity check: if you were expecting a Thursday and the countdown says Wednesday, you are probably looking at the wrong date on the ticket.

How a festival year usually runs

• 6–9 months out: tickets. The biggest festivals sell out long before any act is confirmed, and many require registration weeks before the sale itself.
• 3–5 months out: the line-up is announced in waves, and travel and accommodation start to fill.
• 2–3 months out: request the time off, and settle the practical questions — car, tent, who is arriving when.
• 2–4 weeks out: the day-by-day schedule appears, and the clashes become real.
• The final week: check what you may bring, since rules on bags, food, and drink differ from one festival to the next.

How the days are counted

The count is in whole calendar days from today to the date you pick, calculated in UTC so it never drifts with time zones or daylight saving. If the date has already passed, the count shows how many days ago it was.
