How many days until Election Day?

The countdown finds the next US Election Day automatically and shows the days remaining, the weeks and days, and the date.

It's the number of days from today until the next US Election Day — no input needed.

Calculating the countdown…

The countdown is measured from your device's local date today to the next occurrence, in whole days, and rolls over to next year once the day passes.

How does it work?

Days are counted in whole calendar days using UTC, so the result is unaffected by time zones or daylight saving. A negative count means the date has already passed.

Days-until formula

d=targettodayd = \text{target} - \text{today}
d
Whole days between today and the target date.
target
The date you are counting down to.
today
The current date (your local today).

From 1 June to 1 July is 30 days.

Method & sources

We count whole calendar days from today to the next occurrence of a fixed annual date. The target rolls forward to the following year once the day has passed. Dates are handled in UTC so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

How we calculate

  • The count is whole days from today to the date you choose.
  • Today is your device's local date; the target date is the one you pick.
  • A negative count means the date has already passed.
  • The day of the week shown is the weekday the target date falls on.

Rounding

The countdown is in whole calendar days. Today and the target date are counted in UTC, so time zones and daylight saving never shift the result.

What this countdown does

US Election Day is defined by a rule rather than a date: the Tuesday after the first Monday of November. That is not the same as the first Tuesday in November, and the difference is real — when 1 November is itself a Tuesday, Election Day is the 8th, a week later than most people would guess. This page applies the rule properly and counts to the next one from today.

How to use it

  1. Open the page — the countdown is already running from today.
  2. Read the days remaining and the exact date.
  3. Check the weeks-and-days breakdown and the weekday it falls on.
  4. Use Share to send the live countdown to anyone.

When it's useful

The date on the calendar is rarely your actual deadline. Voter registration closes earlier in most states, mail ballots have to be requested and then returned, and early voting opens weeks ahead. Reading the countdown in weeks tells you which of those windows you are still inside.

The dates for the next few years

  • 3 November 2026 — midterm elections
  • 2 November 2027 — state and local elections only
  • 7 November 2028 — presidential election
  • 6 November 2029 — state and local elections only
  • 5 November 2030 — midterm elections

The deadlines that come before the day

  • Roughly one to two months out: voter registration closes in many states. Deadlines vary widely, and a handful of states allow registration on the day itself.
  • About a month out: the window for requesting a mail or absentee ballot, where one is needed.
  • Two to four weeks out: early in-person voting opens in most states.
  • The final week: returning a mail ballot by post gets risky — many states count arrival, not postmark.
  • Election Day: polls open and close on state-set hours, and it is not a federal holiday.

Why a Tuesday in November

The rule dates from 1845 and was written for a farming country that travelled by horse. November came after the harvest and before winter made the roads impassable; Tuesday left Monday free for the journey to the county seat without requiring anyone to travel on a Sunday. The reasoning is long obsolete, the date is not.

How the days are counted

The count is in whole calendar days from today to the date you pick, calculated in UTC so it never drifts with time zones or daylight saving. If the date has already passed, the count shows how many days ago it was.

FAQ

How many days until Election Day?
The countdown above shows the exact number of days from today until the next US Election Day.
What date is the next Election Day?
The countdown shows it directly. The upcoming dates are 3 November 2026, 2 November 2027, 7 November 2028, 6 November 2029, and 5 November 2030.
Is Election Day the first Tuesday in November?
Not quite. It is the Tuesday after the first Monday, which is usually the same thing — but when 1 November falls on a Tuesday, Election Day is the 8th instead.
Is there an election every year?
Federal elections are in even years: presidential every four years and midterms in between. Odd years use the same Tuesday for state and local races in some places and have no election at all in others.
When is the next presidential election?
7 November 2028. The one after that falls on 2 November 2032.
Which election does this track?
The general election date set by the US convention. Primaries run on their own state-by-state schedule through the spring and summer, and other countries' elections use entirely different rules.
Can I share the countdown?
Yes. Share copies a link that reopens the countdown to the same date, always counting from the viewer's today.
