Salary to hourly formula
- S
- Gross annual salary.
- h
- Hours worked per week.
- w
- Weeks worked per year.
52,000 a year at 40 hours over 52 weeks is 52,000 / (40 × 52) = 25 an hour.
Method & sources
All figures are gross pay, before tax, pension, and other deductions. The hourly rate is the annual salary divided by hours per week times weeks per year. The daily figure assumes a 5-day working week, spreading the weekly hours across 5 days.

- The daily figure assumes a 5-day working week, spreading the weekly hours across 5 days.
- The monthly figure is the annual salary divided by 12; the weekly figure is the annual salary divided by weeks per year.
- The currency shown follows the site language; the conversion math is the same in every market.
Rounding
Pay figures are rounded to two decimals for display. The calculation itself uses full precision.
What this calculator does
This calculator turns a gross annual salary into an hourly wage. It divides the salary by the total hours worked in a year (hours per week multiplied by weeks per year), then derives daily, weekly, and monthly equivalents from the same figures.
How to use it
- Enter your gross annual salary.
- Enter the hours you work per week (default 37.5).
- Enter the weeks you work per year (default 52).
- Read the hourly rate and the daily, weekly, and monthly breakdown below.
A worked example
A salary of 52,000 at 40 hours over 52 weeks is 52,000 / (40 × 52) = 25 an hour. The monthly figure is 52,000 / 12 ≈ 4,333, and the weekly figure is 52,000 / 52 = 1,000.
How the daily figure works
The daily pay assumes a 5-day working week. It spreads the weekly hours across 5 days, so at 40 hours a week the daily figure covers 8 hours. If you work a different number of days, treat the daily figure as an estimate.
Common mistakes
- Using a net (after-tax) salary. The calculator works on gross pay; tax and deductions are not included.
- Leaving weeks per year at 52 when you take unpaid leave. Lowering the weeks raises the hourly rate.
- Forgetting part-time hours. Hours per week should reflect what you actually work.
When it's useful
Comparing a salaried offer with hourly or contract work, sense-checking a job ad, or working out what your time is worth per hour.
FAQ
- How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
- Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. That is hours per week multiplied by weeks per year. 52,000 at 40 hours over 52 weeks is 25 an hour.
- Is this before or after tax?
- Before tax. All figures are gross pay. Tax, pension, and other deductions are not included.
- How is the daily figure calculated?
- It assumes a 5-day working week and spreads your weekly hours across 5 days, so it is the hourly rate times hours per week divided by 5.
- What if I don't work 52 weeks a year?
- Lower the weeks per year to match your paid working weeks. Fewer weeks means each hour is worth more for the same annual salary.
- Which currency does it use?
- The currency follows the site language. The conversion math is identical in every market.
- Can I share a calculation?
- Yes. Use Share to copy a link that reopens the calculator with the same salary, hours, and weeks.
