When does a more efficient appliance actually pay for itself?
A new fridge or dryer saves electricity every year but costs money once. Here is how to work out which side wins, using the kWh figures already printed on the energy label.
The trade is a one-off price against a yearly saving
Every argument for replacing a working appliance comes down to the same comparison: you pay a price once, and you save a smaller amount every year for as long as you keep the new machine. Whether that is a good deal depends on three numbers — how much energy the old one uses, how much less the new one uses, and what you pay per kilowatt-hour.

Read the label, not the marketing
Cooling appliances state their consumption in kWh per year, because a fridge runs continuously. Washing machines, dishwashers, and tumble dryers state it in kWh per 100 cycles, because their energy use depends entirely on how often you run them. Mixing the two is the most common mistake in this calculation: a dryer at 235 kWh per 100 cycles is not a 235 kWh per year appliance unless you happen to run it a hundred times.
- Cooling: take the kWh per year figure straight from the label.
- Washing and drying: take kWh per 100 cycles and multiply by your own cycles per year, divided by 100.
- For the appliance you already own, a plug-in meter over a week beats a fifteen-year-old sticker.
A worked example with honest numbers
An old fridge-freezer using 450 kWh a year against a replacement rated at 150 kWh saves 300 kWh. At 0.30 per kWh that is 90 a year. A purchase price of 700 therefore takes about 7.8 years to repay — the first full year in the black is year 8, and over a ten-year horizon replacing wins by roughly 200. That is a real saving, but it is not the dramatic one the sticker on the showroom floor implies.
Change one input and the answer moves a lot. Double the electricity price and the payback halves. Halve the gap between the two appliances and it doubles. When the payback argument does not hold
If the payback lands past the point where you expect to still own the appliance, the electricity saving alone does not justify buying now. That is a legitimate answer, and it is worth getting in writing before a salesperson turns efficiency into urgency. Replacing can still be the right call — a freezer that no longer holds temperature, a machine that has already needed one repair, a kitchen being rebuilt — but then the reason is reliability, not the energy bill.
- Interest, delivery, and installation are not in the payback figure unless you add them to the price.
- Whatever the old appliance is worth second-hand shortens the payback; a trade-in discount does the same.
- Label figures come from a standard test programme, so a household that washes hotter or fuller will not match them exactly.
Do the same check before the next purchase
The useful habit is to run the comparison before you go shopping rather than in the shop. Note the old appliance's consumption, decide the horizon you actually plan for, and then judge each candidate against it.
